Prayer for the Unengaged and Unreached People Groups

I will say with caution that I believe that the Lord has burdened my heart to begin to pray and ask for prayer for UUPG/UPG (Unreached Unengaged People Groups/Unreached People Groups). I ask you to consider joining with me in this enormous task and responsibility. Perhaps one way that we could pray as a church is to learn about one area of the world where these groups live in a predominant number. As I was in Richmond a couple months ago, I stopped at the International Mission Board Headquarters (SBC). Upon request they put me into contact with two of their missionary teams in South Asia where in a population of 1.7 Billion people (about ¼ of the world living in a space of ½ of the lower 48 consecutive U.S. states, spanning through Pakistan to India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka). There are over 1,900 UUPG/UPGs in this geographical space.

When the missionaries (Both the Houk and Gray families serving as full time IMB missionaries in South Asia) met with me for a 3-way Skype conversation, I was blown away by what they described. Though I am very familiar with the UUPG/UPG needs in the world, what I learned about South Asia was mind boggling. I learned that this area of the world has the largest unreached UUPG/UPG population in the world at about 1.5 billion people. In this area of Hindus, Muslim, Buddhists, Sikhs and others, where the top languages are Hindi and Bengali, about 250,000 people die every week without Jesus Christ. As well, this region, especially throughout Hindu India is increasing in hostility against non-Hindus.

The challenge is enormous; the missionaries feel overwhelmingly insignificant for the size of the task. It is strategic for the IMB to give us these missionary contacts from this vastly unreached region of the world. I am including two prayer requests and 1 UUPG prayer card. Please pray for the Christian national leader working with the missionaries to form the ministry network in Chhattisgarh, India. He is mentoring about 20 lay leaders/ church planters. He was diagnosed with cancer two months ago and is undergoing chemotherapy. Also, for a national leader helping the missionaries named Bittu in India who was recently in a serious motorcycle accident. (requiring months of recovery after a surgery).

And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. (Luke 10:2)
